More About Us

Who We Are

We are a group of Christian believers gathering for worship in a small chapel built over one hundred years ago almost in the heart of the university city of Oxford.

When We Meet

Following the example of the first Christian churches we meet to worship God each Sunday, The Lord's Day, as follows:

Our Lord's Day Services are simple in format, generally following a pattern similar to that below:

It is our Pastor's normal practice to preach consecutively through a Bible book in an expository way. We are currently considering the Prophecy of Isaiah during the morning services and the Gospel of Luke in the evening. Visiting preachers will not, of course, adhere to this pattern.

We also have a meeting on Tuesday evening at 7:00pm for Bible Study and Prayer. This is occasionally replaced by a meeting to hear from a speaker from a missionary organisation or other Christian charity. Details are given in the Chapel diary.

The Lord's Supper

The Lord's Supper is held on the first Lord's Day evening of each month, following the public worship service. It is the only service at the chapel which is effectively restricted to members, and you are welcome to join us for all other meetings. (However, those who are not partaking are still welcome to remain in the chapel and witness the Lord's Supper being observed.) Other likeminded believers known to the church, who have been baptised on profession of faith, may be invited to partake at the discretion of the pastor.

Sunday School

This was held for many years from 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm each Sunday afternoon and was open to children and young people aged between 3 and 16. It provided an opportunity for children to learn about God in a serious but happy atmosphere.

Sadly we have now had to suspend the Sunday School through lack of support from local families. However, we hope and pray that it may be possible to re-open it in due course. We would welcome enquiries from anyone who might be interested in having their child or children attend.

Outreach Activities

As a church we are concerned to obey the Great Commission. Therefore as well as our interest in missionary endeavour in other places, we seek to reach out to the people of Jericho and Oxford as a whole. For most months throughout the year we engage in a programme of outreach to the local neighbourhood. We use a combination of leaflet distribution and personal contact. In December we customarily distribute gospel calendars throughout Jericho, which have generally been warmly received.
